Types of Emergencies
Medical Emergencies
Customer or Staff Injury
Assess the situation - Is it life-threatening?
- If YES: Call 911 immediately
- If NO: Provide first aid and assess if medical attention needed
Immediate Actions:
- Call 911 for serious injuries (bleeding, unconsciousness, chest pain, difficulty breathing)
- Have someone meet paramedics at the entrance
- Do not move injured person unless in immediate danger
- Keep person calm and comfortable
- Have someone document what happened
After Emergency:
- Complete incident report immediately
- Notify manager as soon as possible
- Preserve any evidence (broken equipment, spills, etc.)
- Document witness information
First Aid Kit Location
- Behind main counter in labeled red box
- Check monthly that supplies are stocked
- Know CPR/First Aid trained staff members
Fire Emergencies
If Fire Detected
- Evacuate immediately if fire is spreading or producing heavy smoke
- Call 911 - Do not assume someone else has called
- Use fire extinguisher ONLY if:
- Fire is very small (size of trash can or smaller)
- You have clear escape route
- You know how to use extinguisher

- Pull the pin
- Aim at base of fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep side to side
Fire Extinguisher Locations
- Behind counter near espresso machine
- In kitchen near stove/cooking area
- Near emergency exit door
Evacuation Procedure
- Announce "Fire - Everyone out now!"
- Direct customers to nearest exit
- Do not stop to collect belongings
- Meeting point: [Specify safe location outside]
- Account for all staff members
- Do not re-enter building until fire department gives all-clear
Security Emergencies
Robbery or Theft in Progress
Your Safety First
Your life is more valuable than any amount of money. Do not resist or chase.
- Stay calm - Comply with demands
- Do not resist - Give them what they ask for
- Observe details safely:
- Physical description
- Clothing
- Vehicle description if visible
- Direction of travel
- After they leave:
- Lock doors
- Call 911 immediately
- Do not touch anything they touched (evidence)
- Document everything you remember
- Contact manager
Suspicious Person or Behavior
- Trust your instincts
- Do not confront
- Stay in public areas
- Call police if person is:
- Threatening customers or staff
- Attempting to enter restricted areas
- Acting erratically or dangerously
- Document description and behavior
- Notify manager
Active Threat Situation
If someone enters with a weapon or violent intent:
RUN - Escape if possible
- Leave belongings behind
- Help others escape if safe
- Prevent others from entering
- Call 911 when safe
HIDE - If escape not possible
- Lock doors, barricade entry
- Silence phones
- Turn off lights
- Hide behind solid objects
- Stay quiet
FIGHT - Only as last resort
- Commit to action
- Use any items as weapons
- Be aggressive
Equipment Emergencies
Gas Leak Suspected
- Evacuate building immediately
- Do not turn lights on/off
- Do not use phones inside building
- Call 911 and gas company from outside
- Do not re-enter until cleared
Electrical Fire or Sparking Equipment
- Turn off main power if safe to access
- Do not use water on electrical fires
- Use Class C fire extinguisher if trained
- Evacuate if fire spreads
- Call 911
Major Water Leak or Flooding
- Turn off water main if accessible and safe
- Move equipment and supplies away from water
- Evacuate if water reaches electrical outlets
- Document damage with photos
- Contact manager and building maintenance
- Call plumber if after hours
Severe Weather
Tornado Warning
- Move customers and staff away from windows
- Go to interior room or bathroom
- Stay low to ground
- Cover head and neck
- Stay until all-clear is given
Severe Thunderstorm
- Stay indoors
- Unplug sensitive equipment if time allows
- Stay away from windows
- Do not go outside until storm passes
Hazardous Material Spill
Chemical Spill (Cleaning Supplies, etc.)
- Evacuate area - Keep people away
- Ventilate if safe - Open doors/windows
- Small spill:
- Wear gloves
- Use spill kit
- Follow product instructions
- Large spill or unknown substance:
- Evacuate building
- Call 911
- Contact poison control if exposure
Food Contamination
- Stop using affected product immediately
- Quarantine contaminated items
- Do not serve any affected food/drinks
- Post sign if menu items unavailable
- Contact health department
- Notify manager immediately
- Document everything
Customer Medical Issues
Customer Choking
- Ask "Are you choking?"
- If they can't speak or breathe:
- Call 911
- Perform Heimlich maneuver if trained
- Continue until object dislodges or EMS arrives
Customer Allergic Reaction
- Call 911 immediately for severe reactions
- Ask if they have EpiPen
- Help them use it if needed
- Keep them calm
- Stay with them until EMS arrives
- Document what they consumed
Customer Appears Intoxicated or Overdosing
- Call 911 if person is unconscious or in distress
- Do not leave person alone
- Turn unconscious person on side
- Do not give food or water
- Stay until EMS arrives
After Any Emergency
Documentation Required
- Incident Report - Complete immediately while details are fresh
- Witness Statements - Get contact info and statements
- Photos - Document any damage or scene
- Manager Notification - Contact as soon as safely possible
- Follow-up - Additional reporting may be required
Incident Report Should Include
- Date, time, location of incident
- Names of all involved (staff, customers, witnesses)
- Detailed description of what happened
- Actions taken
- Emergency services called (which agency, when)
- Injuries reported
- Damage assessment
- Your signature and date
Training Requirements
All staff must:
- Know all emergency exits
- Know location of fire extinguishers
- Know location of first aid kit
- Have emergency contact numbers accessible
- Review these procedures annually
- Participate in emergency drills if conducted
